Namibia’s wireless market leader Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) has launched commercial 4G data services over a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network covering large parts of the capital, Windhoek. Videotron delivers on 200Mbps promise
As promised in March, Videotron has launched its highest speed cable broadband package to date, offering 200Mbps/30Mbps download/upload connections under the ‘Ultimate Speed Internet 200′ banner in Quebec City. The DOCSIS 3.0-based package gives consumers monthly data transfer limits up to 200GB for downloads and up to 50GB for uploads, and costs CAD199.95 (USD197.20)
BIPT chairman warns fourth 3G licence could be revoked if launch obligation not met
Tecteo Telenet Bidco (TTB), a partnership between cable operator Telenet and the Tecteo Group, which owns Wallonia-based cableco VOO, could have its 3G licence revoked should it fail to launch commercial services over its own network by the early part of next year, L’Echo claims. The local news source cites Luc Hindryckx, chairman of the Belgian Institute for Post and Telecommunications (BIPT), as saying that under the terms of the joint venture’s concession, which was formally awarded in August 2011, it is obliged to inaugurate its own network by mid-January 2013
Regulator to investigate Claro outage
Argentina’s telecoms regulator Comision Nacional de Comunicaciones (CNC) will investigate the possibility of imposing sanctions on mobile operator Claro, following an outage on the America Movil-owned company’s network in parts of Buenos Aires earlier this month, BNamerica reports, citing state news service Telam.
T-Mobile latest to unveil LTE services for business users
T-Mobile’s Dutch mobile subsidiary has launched a 4G service at a number of key locations in the country, Telecompaper reports. The cellco’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) services are being tested by selected business users, under the banner ‘T-Mobile 26’ in Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden, Gorinchem and Delft. T-Mobile 26 is billed as a data-only plan, exclusive to businesses, and is priced at EUR85 (USD109.8) per month, excluding VAT.
UPC Ireland reports 13% rise in subscribers
Irish cable broadband, TV and voice telephony provider UPC Ireland, part of Liberty Global, has reported a strong rise in total subscribers, with nearly one million people now using its services in the Republic. The cableco closed out the first quarter of this year with 922,600 revenue generating customers, up 13% on the corresponding period on 2011, including 272,700 broadband subscribers (up 26%) and 187,200 voice telephony customers (+71%)
Tonga Cable picks Alca-Lu for Tonga-Fiji cable link
Tonga Cable has selected French-US equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent to roll out a submarine cable link between the Kingdom of Tonga and neighbouring Fiji. The proposed 837km link will provide the Tongan islands with improved broadband services for its 100,000 or so residents, including streaming video, as well as providing the nation with access to the Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific link between Australia and the US. Under the plan, Alca-Lu is deploying its submarine optical solution based on the OALC-5 cables, repeaters and the 1620 Light Manager (LM) submarine line terminal, which can accommodate 10G/40G/100G wavelengths in the same platform, it said.
LGI books net loss of USD25.1 million
International cable company Liberty Global Inc (LGI) has reported total revenues of USD2.54 billion for the three months ended 31 March 2012, up from USD2.26 billion recorded a year earlier. The growth was attributed primarily to the acquisitions of Kabel BW (KBW) and Aster (in Germany and Poland respectively) last year, offsetting negative foreign currency movements
Videotron’s internet, mobile sales climb 13.7%, 81.6%
Quebec-based quadruple-play cableco Videotron has reported that in the first quarter of 2012 its revenues from its telecoms services division rose by 10.7% year-on-year to CAD645.8 million (USD644.7 million), as cable broadband internet access grew by CAD23.0 million or 13.7% to CAD191.4 million, cable telephony revenue climbed 4.1% to CAD111.7 million and mobile voice/data services turnover jumped by 81.6% or CAD16.9 million to CAD37.6 million. This progress augmented cable TV sales which grew by 9.1% y-o-y to CAD268 million in January-March 2012, and helped push the telecoms segment’s Q1 operating income up by CAD48.5 million (19.1%) y-o-y to CAD303 million. Videotron’s mobile subscriber base increased by 22,000 in three months to reach 312,800 at 31 March 2012, while it added 8,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter, for a total of 1.341 million.
Liberia’s ACE link operational in October
Liberia’s president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has opened the terminal in Monrovia that houses the country’s connection to the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) undersea cable system, which connects 23 countries between France and South Africa. Liberia’s link to the 17,000km cable will be operational from October this year.
