MTN Ghana inks USD276m syndicated loan for network expansion

MTN Ghana, owned by South African mobile telecoms group MTN, has secured a syndicated loan worth USD276 million to help finance its network expansion in the west African country. MTN Ghana managing director Michael Ikpoki told Reuters that 16 local banks, led by Stanbic Bank Ghana, will provide GHS410 million (USD216 million) of the total sum, while a further USD60 million is being raised via four foreign banks

O2 UK rolling out DC-HSPA+?

British mobile network operator O2 UK has reportedly begun the deployment of Dual Carrier HSPA+ (DC-HSPA+) technology, CNET UK claims. Citing an unnamed O2 UK spokesman as confirming the development, the cellco is understood to be rolling out the technology with a view to increasing theoretical downlink speeds to up to 42Mbps.

Comcel selects ZTE for managed services

China’s ZTE Corporation has signed an agreement to provide managed services to Mexican-backed cellco Comcel. The Chinese vendor said in a statement that the deal included the provision of base transceiver stations (BTS) and power equipment to the Colombian operator. ZTE claimed that this most recent agreement built on an earlier deal with Telefonica Telecom and, as a result, it would provide managed services to more than 6,000 sites in Colombia.

Tigo launches Ghana’s first unlimited mobile internet plans

Millicom-owned Tigo, Ghana’s second largest cellular operator by subscribers, has unveiled the country’s first unlimited mobile internet plans which offer customers time-based rather than volume-based tariffs. The cellco’s acting general manager, Obafemi Banigbe, told local news portal Joy Online: ‘With this unlimited internet plan… our subscribers can read the news, search on Google, listen to music, watch videos, download and stream movies and not bother about their internet volume finishing.’ Mobile handset users can access the internet with rates starting at GHS0.99 (USD0.53) per day, rising to GHS22.99 for a whole month

Falling subscriber base hits Telenor revenues

Telenor Serbia, the nation’s second largest cellco by subscribers, has booked revenues of NOK656 million (USD112.8 million) for the three months ended 31 March 2012, dipping slightly year-on-year by NOK1 million. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were NOK257 million.

GP’s profits jump 81%

The largest cellco in Bangladesh by subscribers and revenues, GrameenPhone (GP), has posted an 81% year-on-year rise in net profits in the three months ended 31 March 2012, reporting BDT5.2 billion (USD62.5 million) compared to BDT2.9 billion in 1Q11, attributing the gain to an efficiency drive alongside lower currency depreciation expenses. Telenor subsidiary GP’s revenues climbed by 12% y-o-y to BDT23.2 billion in Q1 2012, as it added 1.1 million net new GSM subscribers in three months to bring its total to 37.6 million at the end of March (up from just below 32 million a year earlier).
