Tele2 denies Russian exit rumours

Swedish telecoms giant Tele2 has denied Russian media reports suggesting that the company plans to sell its Russian subsidiary. In a statement issued late on Tuesday, Tele2 said: ‘The management of Tele2 Russia is not holding any talks on the sale of its business’

Viva announces sales of KWD94 million for 2011

The Kuwaiti cellular operator Viva has reported revenues of KWD94 million (USD337 million) for 2011 and a net loss for the year of KWD14 million. The cellco, which recently announced that it had passed the one million subscriber milestone, says it now accounts for 20% of Kuwait’s mobile telephony market. Viva, which is backed by Saudi Telecom Company (STC), launched Kuwait’s third cellular network in December 2008, competing against more established players Zain and Wataniya (NMTC)

Arcep reports strong increase in mobile subscribers in Q1

France’s telecoms industry regulator Arcep has published its findings on the mobile communications market in France and its overseas territories for the period ended 31 March 2012, showing strong growth since the arrival of Iliad’s Free Mobile start-up in January. The watchdog reported that the total number of mobile service customers in metropolitan France and the overseas territories stood at 69.5 million, thanks to net additions of close to 900,000 SIMs in the quarter, a cellular penetration of 106.5% of the national population. Net growth in Q1 2012 far outstripped the average for the preceding five years (of 300,000 SIMs) it said, as Free Mobile made an instant impact on the mainland

VIP Mobile Q1 revenues up 22.5%, EBIT improves 35.7%

Macedonian cellular operator VIP Mobile, part of the Telekom Austria Group, reported a 22.5% year-on-year increase in revenues to EUR13.6 million (USD17.6 million) in the first three months of this year, up from EUR11.1 million in the corresponding year-earlier period. The carrier said that first-quarter turnover, including fee and traffic revenues and interconnection revenues, grew sharply as a result of an increase in the mobile subscriber base and rises in call volumes.

No new licences on offer in Zimbabwe

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has revealed that it has no plans to issue new fixed line or mobile telephony licences, despite interest from a number of foreign firms, Telecompaper reports. The regulator says the government would have to alter legislation to permit new players to enter the market, which is currently served by one fixed operator – TelOne – and three cellular providers – Econet Wireless, Telecel and NetOne.

Profits jump 42% at AIS

Thailand’s largest cellco by subscribers, Advanced Info Service (AIS), has attributed a 42% year-on-year rise in first-quarter net profits to rising mobile data/internet and voice revenues from smartphone users. Net income for the three months ended 31 March 2012 was THB8.93 billion (USD290 million), up from THB6.27 billion in the same period of 2011, on quarterly revenues that climbed 13% year-on-year to THB35.18 billion. Voice revenues grew by 7.5% y-o-y while non-voice revenue jumped 32% over the same timeframe

MTN and Expresso hit with QoS fines

The Ghanaian cellular operators MTN and Expresso have been fined by the regulator the National Communications Authority (NCA) for providing poor quality of service (QoS). MTN was fined GHS150,000 (USD79,700) and Expresso received a GHS100,000 fine, according to a report from Ghana Business News, though the Expresso penalty has been suspended on condition that it installs a mast to improve services in the Tarkwa area

Hi3G Sweden signs 4G/3G TDD/FDD expansion deal with ZTE

China’s ZTE Corporation has announced the signing of a deal with Swedish mobile operator Hi3G Access worth USD74 million to expand its 4G and 3G cellular infrastructure. Under the ‘strategic cooperation agreement’ ZTE says it will deploy several thousand UMTS/LTE TDD/LTE FDD base stations, as well as auxiliary microwave and data transmission equipment over the next three years. ‘We are very glad to ink the deal with Hi3G in Sweden where the two companies launched the world’s first multi-mode LTE network,’ said Huang Zheng, CEO of ZTE Sweden.

Amnet’s acquisition of Telefonica Multiservicios given green light

El Salvador’s competition regulator Superintendencia de Competencia (SC) has announced that it has approved the acquisition of Telefonica Multiservicios by Millicom International Cellular’s (MIC’s) Amnet Telecommunications, after having determined that the deal would not significantly affect competition in the market. A joint venture between Telefonica Moviles El Salvador (itself owned by Telefonica of Spain) and Amnet (a wholly owned subsidiary of Luxembourg’s MIC since October 2008), Telefonica Multiservicios provides fixed telephony, internet access and cable TV services in El Salvador.
