Polish internet service provider (ISP) Multimedia Polska has announced the extension of its cable network to three more cities; Chojnow, Wolow and Nowa Ruda. The expansion adds a further 7,500 homes with access to Multimedia’s triple play offerings, including standard and high definition (HD) TV, video-on-demand (VoD) services, high speed internet access and telephony.
VTR launches mobile services, will use existing customer base to drive growth
Chilean cableco VTR has launched commercial voice and data services over its 3G W-CDMA network. The company’s chairman, Mauricio Ramos said that the telco would bring ‘more competition, more innovation and more convenience’ to Chilean mobile subscribers.
SFR loses 620,000 mobile subscribers in frantic first quarter
The French media and communications group Vivendi has confirmed that its domestic telco SFR lost 620,000 mobile customers in the first three months of the year, including 274,000 post-paid subscribers. SFR’s cellular customer base dropped to 20.84 million at end-March, down from 21.46 million three months earlier, as a result of increased competition following the launch of new low-cost network operator Free Mobile in mid-January. Telecom NZ confirms customer LTE trials by end-2012
Telecom New Zealand has announced that it will be conducting live customer trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technology later this year, in preparation for the evolution of its ‘XT’ mobile broadband network from 3G to 4G. A press statement released by the operator quotes its CEO Paul Reynolds as saying: ‘Future network investment will be based on maintaining our network leadership position with a particular focus on accommodating the explosive growth in mobile data and continued rise of smart-devices. We will progressively adopt 4G network capability, starting with a customer trial later this year using LTE technology.
China Telecom pushes fibre services in Shanghai
China Telecom plans to increase the number of subscribers using its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in Shanghai by one million by the end of the year, bringing the total FTTH customer base for the city to 2.3 million, C114 reports Zhang Weihua, the telco’s manager for Shanghai as saying. At the end of 2011, China Telecom’s FTTH network passed 4.5 million homes, with 1.3 million subscribers taking fibre-based services. The telco aims to achieve citywide FTTH coverage by the end of 2015, and have increase the proportion of broadband customers taking fibre services to 90% by that date
Operating cost reductions boost BT’s profits in FY2011/12
British fixed line incumbent BT has released financial results for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2012, revealing an improved bottom line, despite a dip in revenue. For the twelve-month period under review BT generated an adjusted turnover of GBP19.307 billion (USD30.4 billion), down 4% compared to the GBP20.076 billion reported for the previous financial year, with the company noting that underlying revenue excluding transit decreased by 1.9%, which it said reflected ‘lower revenue from calls and lines and the challenging environment in certain markets’.
6Telecom inaugurates new Metro Network
Tanzanian fixed line operator Six Telecoms Company (6Telecom) has launched a new Metro Network in the country, targeting the corporate user segment. 6Telecom is looking to offer business users improved internet connectivity in the region with CEO Nick Odero noting: ‘As companies grow and expand in Tanzania it is important that they have a dedicated network that will allow for them to connect all of their branches in a redundant and secure manner that is robust and cost effective. Metro Network is aligned to act as a business development partner for our clients as reliable and secure networks are a vital component to growth within East Africa.’ The unit’s 6Telecom Data arm aims to match customer requirements to the desired level of connectivity they need.

Telenor Pakistan has recorded revenues of NOK1.387 billion (USD238.6 million) for the first quarter of 2012, up from NOK1.179 billion seen in Q1 2011.
Heavy investment and declining wholesale income eats into Swisscom’s bottom line
Switzerland’s fixed line incumbent and largest telco by subscribers, Swisscom, has noted a fall in net profits for the first quarter of 2012, as investments in broadband networks and falling income from the wholesale and corporate segments ate into the company’s bottom line.
IZZI to invest EUR10m this year
The Latvian cable TV operator IZZI has pledged to invest EUR10 million this year in developing new infrastructure and upgrading its networks to improve customer experience. The firm expects to be offering telephony, internet and television services to 170,000 households by the end of the year, Broadband TV News reports
