Telecom Italia chairman Franco Bernabe has confirmed that the group’s Brazilian asset TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) will take part in the country’s upcoming auction of 4G mobile spectrum, despite concerns over the regulator, Anatel’s, auction process. With the auction of frequencies suitable for Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology set to start on 12 June, only last week Brazil’s leading cellcos TIM, Oi, Vivo, Claro and Sweden’s AINMT (which controls Net1), reportedly filed separate petitions to challenge Anatel’s auction plan
EMT reveals mobile TV-over-LTE trial
Estonian mobile network operator Eesti Mobiiltelefon (EMT) has announced the launch of a pilot project in which it will test mobile TV services over its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. With the company noting that its 4G infrastructure now covers around 40% of the Estonian population, EMT CEO Valdo Kalm noted that pricing for the service has yet to be determined, stating that his company was currently collecting information regarding tariffs for similar products in other countries.
Lightsquared files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Stricken open-access Long Term Evolution (LTE) start-up LightSquared has announced that it has commenced voluntarily reorganisation cases under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code to give it time to resolve regulatory issues that have prevented it from building its coast-to-coast integrated satellite 4G wireless network. The company will also file a recognition proceeding in Canada, which relates to cross-border insolvency cases. The company fully expects to continue normal operations throughout this process.
Government considering regional LTE tenders
According to an unconfirmed report by Vedomsoti, Russia’s Ministry of Communications (MinSvyaz) is considering a plan to hold separate Long Term Evolution (LTE) tenders in at least ten regions.
Las Vegas cops take a gamble on LTE
Florida-based Harris Corporation has announced that it installing 700MHz Long Term Evolution (LTE) configured modems in a number of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) vehicles in a pilot programme aimed at demonstrating the potential of next generation wireless broadband technology. LVMPD is testing Harris’ Radio Access Network infrastructure, which is connected to the Harris-hosted LTE core in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Finnish vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has supplied a number of ‘eNode B’ base stations, which are able to operate in all 20MHz of the 700MHz ‘Band 14’ spectrum allocated to public safety.
Delayed Yota LTE network goes live in Moscow; MTS linked with MVNO arrangement
Russian WiMAX-turned-Long Term Evolution (LTE) operator Scartel, which operates under the ‘Yota’ brand name, has inaugurated its delayed LTE network in Moscow, using equipment supplied by Huawei Technologies. The Chinese vendor has supplied the Russian firm with its end-to-end SingleRAN LTE/EPC solution, which it claims will provide theoretical download speeds of up to 70Mbps or 140Mbps, depending on the capacity of the radio channel (i.e. 10MHz or 20MHz).
T-Mobile latest to unveil LTE services for business users
T-Mobile’s Dutch mobile subsidiary has launched a 4G service at a number of key locations in the country, Telecompaper reports. The cellco’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) services are being tested by selected business users, under the banner ‘T-Mobile 26’ in Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden, Gorinchem and Delft. T-Mobile 26 is billed as a data-only plan, exclusive to businesses, and is priced at EUR85 (USD109.8) per month, excluding VAT.
Telecom NZ confirms customer LTE trials by end-2012
Telecom New Zealand has announced that it will be conducting live customer trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technology later this year, in preparation for the evolution of its ‘XT’ mobile broadband network from 3G to 4G. A press statement released by the operator quotes its CEO Paul Reynolds as saying: ‘Future network investment will be based on maintaining our network leadership position with a particular focus on accommodating the explosive growth in mobile data and continued rise of smart-devices. We will progressively adopt 4G network capability, starting with a customer trial later this year using LTE technology.
T-Mobile taps Ericsson, NSN for LTE rollout
T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it has awarded multi-year network equipment supply contracts to two international vendors, Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN); both agreements relate to the deployment of T-Mobile’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. The contracts, which Bloomberg says are worth around USD4 billion, will see 37,000 cell sites upgraded to support LTE.
ANCOM approves MVNO regulatory guidelines
The National Authority for Management and Regulations in Communications (ANCOM) has published a set of regulatory guidelines to pave the way for the introduction of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) into the Romanian wireless market. The new document explains the practicalities of authorisation, the allocation of numbering resources and the conclusion of agreements with mobile network operators, within the context of the current regulatory framework.
