Namibia’s wireless market leader Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) has launched commercial 4G data services over a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network covering large parts of the capital, Windhoek. Leap Wireless International plans to expand the projected coverage offered by its in-deployment Long Term Evolution (LTE) network from 20-25 million people by the end of this year, to 60-65 million by late-2013/early-2014, Fierce Wireless reports.
Tele2 denies Russian exit rumours
Swedish telecoms giant Tele2 has denied Russian media reports suggesting that the company plans to sell its Russian subsidiary. In a statement issued late on Tuesday, Tele2 said: ‘The management of Tele2 Russia is not holding any talks on the sale of its business’
UAE’s Du considers plan for Saudi MVNO licence
United Arab Emirates-based mobile operator Du is reportedly considering plans to bid for a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) licence in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, in what would be its first foray into international waters. The National newspaper quotes DU chief executive Osman Sultan as confirming the cellco’s intentions to look for new opportunities overseas, possibly in Saudi Arabia, as it battles with rival Etisalat in an increasingly saturated local mobile market
Angola’s dos Santos buys 5% Zon stake from Telefonica to become leading shareholder
Angolan investor Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of the country’s president Jose Eduardo dos Santos, has acquired an additional 5% stake in Portuguese cableco Zon Multimedia, Reuters reports. Dos Santos purchased the holding from Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica , making her Kento Holding investment arm the company’s largest shareholder with 15%

Middle Eastern carrier-neutral submarine fibre network operator Gulf Bridge International (GBI) and optical technology provider Xtera Communications have deployed what they claim to be the Mediterranean Sea’s first commercial 100Gbps repeatered submarine cable system on the GBI network connecting Egypt to Italy.
WASACE confident of 2014 launch; cable supplier to be selected July 2012
The management of start-up international cable venture WASACE has stated this week that the proposed 40Tbps submarine fibre network, including a section linking South America with Angola, Nigeria and South Africa will be ready for service in early 2014. A report from South African website Techcentral quoted the WASACE Cable Company as saying that it had begun the procurement process to select a system supplier for the Africa-Americas-Europe cable’s construction. An invitation to tender has been sent to four potential suppliers ahead of a winner hopefully being selected in July 2012.
First quarter sales up 1% at Zain Group
Kuwait’s Zain Group has reported a 1% year-on-year increase in first quarter revenues to KWD325.7 million (USD1.17 billion), while EBITDA and net profit both climbed 2% to reach KWD150.8 million and KWD70.9 million respectively. The group controlled 40.3 million active subscribers across its operations in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Sudan, South Sudan, Lebanon and Morocco at the end of March 2012, up 7% from twelve months earlier
Globe Telecom inks separate deals with Vonage, Sybase 365
Globe Telecom has entered into an agreement with Vonage Holdings, a leading provider of international voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) phone services for home and small business users, to deliver low-cost international calls to and from the Philippines. With a three million-strong Filipino diaspora currently residing in the US, both firms are looking to capitalise on the potential growth opportunities to be had from VoIP call services. In a separate development, Globe says it has selected Sybase 365, a subsidiary of mobile messaging and mobile commerce services developer Sybase Inc, to expand its global IPX connectivity via a suite of trans-operator interconnect services, including voice and data roaming
Amnet’s acquisition of Telefonica Multiservicios given green light
El Salvador’s competition regulator Superintendencia de Competencia (SC) has announced that it has approved the acquisition of Telefonica Multiservicios by Millicom International Cellular’s (MIC’s) Amnet Telecommunications, after having determined that the deal would not significantly affect competition in the market. A joint venture between Telefonica Moviles El Salvador (itself owned by Telefonica of Spain) and Amnet (a wholly owned subsidiary of Luxembourg’s MIC since October 2008), Telefonica Multiservicios provides fixed telephony, internet access and cable TV services in El Salvador.
