TalkTalk talks up higher on-net subscriber base, as FY12 revenue drops 4.4%

Alternative British broadband and fixed voice provider TalkTalk has released results for its financial year ended 31 March 2012, and while the operator saw a drop in its total number of broadband subscribers it highlighted an increase in those customers signed up for more profitable on-net services. As at end-March 2012 TalkTalk’s broadband subscriber base stood at 4.066 million, down from 4.199 million a year earlier, although on-net subscribers rose by 4.1% year-on-year to reach 3.755 million, and now account for more than 92% of the total base, compared to around 86% a year earlier. Sign-ups for the telco’s fibre-based upgrade option, which increases downlink speeds up to 40Mbps for an extra GBP10 (USD16) per month, continued to grow meanwhile, with 9,000 customers now having taken up the add-on.

TIM Brasil to market FTTx service under ‘Live’ banner

Brazilian telco TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil), part of the Telecom Italia group, has revealed that it will market fibre-to-the-curb/fibre-to-the-building (FTTC/FTTB) services under the brand name ‘Live’, and aims to sign up one million subscribers within five years.

IIJ reports 18% rise in sales for FY2011

The Japanese internet service provider (ISP) Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) has reported full-year net income of JPY3.64 billion (USD44.1 million) in its 2011 fiscal year to 31 March 2012, a year-on-year increase of 13.7%, on the back of an 18.1% rise in revenues to JPY97.32 billion. Koichi Suzuki, president and CEO of IIJ, said the company is expecting another year of double-digit growth in 2012. IIJ reported 397,191 home internet subscribers and 93,807 corporate customers at the end of March 2012, up from 374,328 and 86,803 respectively a year earlier

freenet reports 8.5% rise in Q1 EBITDA

German mobile service provider freenet has confirmed its guidance for full year 2012, following the announcement of its financial results for the first quarter of the year. The company said it generated revenue EUR744.2 million (USD960.9 million) in the three months ended 31 March 2012, down 5.7% year-on-year, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) totalled EUR85.1 million in 1Q12, an increase of 8.5% from EUR78.4 million in the year-ago quarter. Group net profit from continuing operations for the reporting period rose by EUR14.6 million or 56% year-on-year to EUR40.6 million.

Zattoo announces LuxGSM live mobile TV tie-up

Zurich-based web TV provider Zattoo has confirmed that it has agreed a deal with Luxembourgian telco P&T which will allow customers of the firm’s LuxGSM mobile unit to watch live TV on their smartphones, tablets and PCs. For EUR2.99 (USD3.88) per month subscribers will gain exclusive access to over 40 live TV channels. Zattoo says that, as a result of the deal, it now has a presence in seven European markets.

NBN Co picks Primus Australia for fixed voice software tests

NBN Co, the public-private company overseeing the construction and management of Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN), has revealed that it has selected Primus Telecom (Australia) to test software which is ‘designed to make it easier for any telecommunications or internet service provider to offer traditional analogue telephone services to consumers and businesses using the fibre network’. With the tests due to run for a four-week period, it was noted that Primus had been selected by NBN Co following a call for expressions of interest from retail service providers which wanted to participate in the software trials. Commenting on the development, NBN Co chief operating officer, Ralph Steffens, said: ‘By undertaking these tests we want to ensure it is easy for retail service providers to offer their customers the services they are familiar with using the equipment they already have’.

Magnet acquires 90% stake in Velocity 1

Irish altnet Magnet Networks has announced the acquisition of a 90% stake in Velocity 1, a fibre broadband service provider in the UK, from Quintain Estates, an urban regeneration specialist in London. Quintain will retain a 10% stake in Velocity 1, and together with Magnet will deploy fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services at a rate of 30,000 homes in the UK per annum. Initial deployments in the Wembley and Greenwich Peninsula areas will see Sky’s television services being provided over fibre.

Mismanagement at COTEL allegedly caused USD124m losses

Bolivia’s Co-operativa de Telefonos Automaticos La Paz (COTEL) is reported to have amassed losses totalling BOB864 million (USD124 million) as a result of at least ten years of mismanagement. BNamericas reports that the claim has been made in a report produced by a lower house special inquiry committee, which has recommended that the comptroller general should conduct special audits on the telco, which is the incumbent local telephony provider in Bolivia’s former capital La Paz and the country’s largest telecoms cooperative. Such audits, it is understood, would focus in particular on the operator’s procurement and acquisition methods, while the committee has also recommended implementing measures to re-do COTEL’s financial results

Declining fixed segment drags TP revenues down 3.4%

Polish broadband and wireless provider Telekomunikacja Polska (TP Group) has reported a 3.4% year-on-year fall in revenues for Q1 2012 as limited growth in the wireless sector failed to offset falling revenues from the fixed segment. TP revenues for the three month period ended 31 March 2012 totalled PLN3.521 billion (USD1.114 million); income from fixed line operations was down 5.4% y-o-y to PLN1.927 billion, whilst mobile revenues increased 0.3% to PLN1.861 billion
