TalkTalk talks up higher on-net subscriber base, as FY12 revenue drops 4.4%

Alternative British broadband and fixed voice provider TalkTalk has released results for its financial year ended 31 March 2012, and while the operator saw a drop in its total number of broadband subscribers it highlighted an increase in those customers signed up for more profitable on-net services. As at end-March 2012 TalkTalk’s broadband subscriber base stood at 4.066 million, down from 4.199 million a year earlier, although on-net subscribers rose by 4.1% year-on-year to reach 3.755 million, and now account for more than 92% of the total base, compared to around 86% a year earlier. Sign-ups for the telco’s fibre-based upgrade option, which increases downlink speeds up to 40Mbps for an extra GBP10 (USD16) per month, continued to grow meanwhile, with 9,000 customers now having taken up the add-on.

Bouygues loses 379,000 subscribers as competition bites

French operator Bouygues Telecom lost 379,000 subscribers in the first three months of 2012 due to the increased competition following the launch of low-cost cellular operator Free Mobile on 10 January this year. Contract subscribers accounted for 210,000 of these losses, but the firm says that since mid-March portability requests have gradually been returning to their previous level

Free Mobile gets off to flying start

France’s Iliad Group has revealed that its new low-cost cellular network operator Free Mobile garnered 2.61 million subscribers between its launch on 10 January and 31 March 2012, giving it around 4% of the overall French mobile market in less than three months. On top of the cellular subscriber growth, the group’s fixed broadband customer base also continued to rise, from 4.85 million at end-2011 to 5.04 million three months later.

MegaFon 1Q12 revenues jump 14.4%

MegaFon, Russia’s second largest cellular operator by subscribers, has reported consolidated revenues of RUB63.10 billion (USD2.08 billion) for the three months ended 31 March 2012, a 14.4% increase on the RUB55.16 billion generated in 1Q12. Operating income before depreciation and amortisation (OIBDA) grew 7.3% to RUB25.54 billion for the January-March period, and net income increased 8.1% to RUB9.27 billion. Capital expenditure for 1Q12 dropped 29.8% from RUB12.92 billion to RUB9.08 billion

NTT posts 8.2% fall in full year net income

Japan’s Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp (NTT) has reported an 8.2% dip in net profits for the full year to 31 March 2012 to JPY467.70 billion (USD5.85 billion), down from JPY509.63 in fiscal 2010/11, mainly attributed to changes in Japan’s corporate tax rules. The carrier said its full-year operating profit inched up 0.7% year-on-year to JPY1.223 trillion on revenues that climbed 2.0% to JPY10.507 trillion

UPC Ireland reports 13% rise in subscribers

Irish cable broadband, TV and voice telephony provider UPC Ireland, part of Liberty Global, has reported a strong rise in total subscribers, with nearly one million people now using its services in the Republic. The cableco closed out the first quarter of this year with 922,600 revenue generating customers, up 13% on the corresponding period on 2011, including 272,700 broadband subscribers (up 26%) and 187,200 voice telephony customers (+71%)

Swinging time for True in Q1; revenues up 25%

Thai quadruple-play operator True Corp has reported that its combined fixed line, broadband, mobile and pay-TV revenues rose by 25% year-on-year to THB21.56 billion (USD681 million) in the first quarter of 2012, after launching commercial 3G services last August and rolling out the new HSPA network to more than 76 provinces, as well as expanding cable broadband services to cities across the country. However, the rapid growth came at an expense, with True posting a net loss of THB456 million in the three months ended 31 March 2012, compared to a net profit of THB11.31 billion in the same period of 2011, as costs leapt by 38% year-on-year to THB16.64 billion and administrative expenses rose by 15% to THB2.69 billion.

Drillisch posts 4.8% rise in Q1 sales

German mobile service provider Drillisch has reported a 4.8% increase in revenue for the first three months of 2012 to EUR84.2 million (USD109 million) from EUR80.3 million in the year-ago quarter. Service revenues totalled EUR75.3 million, compared to EUR72.4 million in Q1 2011. The company said that earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew 18.5% year-on-year from EUR12.5 million to EUR14.8 million in the first quarter of 2012

Telefonica O2 CR Q1 net income down 6.9%; beats market expectations

Telefonica O2 Czech Republic, which is majority owned by Telefonica of Spain, booked net profit of CZK1.62 billion (USD83.2 million) for its first quarter ended 31 March 2012, down 6.9% from CZK1.74 billion in the year-earlier period, but beating market expectations of profit of CZK1.61 billion. Revenues for January-March were reported at CZK12.47 billion, a 3.3% annual decline and below market forecasts of turnover of CZK12.53 billion

Videotron’s internet, mobile sales climb 13.7%, 81.6%

Quebec-based quadruple-play cableco Videotron has reported that in the first quarter of 2012 its revenues from its telecoms services division rose by 10.7% year-on-year to CAD645.8 million (USD644.7 million), as cable broadband internet access grew by CAD23.0 million or 13.7% to CAD191.4 million, cable telephony revenue climbed 4.1% to CAD111.7 million and mobile voice/data services turnover jumped by 81.6% or CAD16.9 million to CAD37.6 million. This progress augmented cable TV sales which grew by 9.1% y-o-y to CAD268 million in January-March 2012, and helped push the telecoms segment’s Q1 operating income up by CAD48.5 million (19.1%) y-o-y to CAD303 million. Videotron’s mobile subscriber base increased by 22,000 in three months to reach 312,800 at 31 March 2012, while it added 8,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter, for a total of 1.341 million.
