Chilean telecoms regulator the Sub-Secretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) has announced the completion of its public-private initiative, to deliver broadband services to remote rural communities. The project, which saw Subtel partner with local operator Entel and was launched December 2009, rolled out wireless broadband networks to 1,474 towns and villages allowing around three million Chileans to access the internet more easily. The project cost USD110 million, with Entel providing USD65 million, and USD45 million coming from the Fund for the Development of Telecommunications (FDT) and the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT).
Morgan Stanley trims KPN stake to 4.93%, financial regulator*says
MarketWatch reports that Morgan Stanley has reduced its stake in Dutch telco KPN Telecom (also known as Royal KPN) from 10.01% to 4.93%. Citing a report by the Dutch financial regulator Autoriteit Financiele Markten (AFM), the journal says the change was made on 11 May. The AFM filing confirms that Morgan Stanley’s stake comprises 2.33% in shares and 2.60% in futures and options.
Regulator to investigate Claro outage
Argentina’s telecoms regulator Comision Nacional de Comunicaciones (CNC) will investigate the possibility of imposing sanctions on mobile operator Claro, following an outage on the America Movil-owned company’s network in parts of Buenos Aires earlier this month, BNamerica reports, citing state news service Telam.
Arcep reports strong increase in mobile subscribers in Q1
France’s telecoms industry regulator Arcep has published its findings on the mobile communications market in France and its overseas territories for the period ended 31 March 2012, showing strong growth since the arrival of Iliad’s Free Mobile start-up in January. The watchdog reported that the total number of mobile service customers in metropolitan France and the overseas territories stood at 69.5 million, thanks to net additions of close to 900,000 SIMs in the quarter, a cellular penetration of 106.5% of the national population. Net growth in Q1 2012 far outstripped the average for the preceding five years (of 300,000 SIMs) it said, as Free Mobile made an instant impact on the mainland
Roskomnadzor announces July tender for LTE frequencies in 791MHz-862MHz band
Russian telecoms regulator Roskomnadzor has announced details of a tender for Long Term Evolution (LTE)-suitable frequencies in the 791MHz-862MHz spectrum band. The process, which is scheduled to commence on 12 July 2012, will offer four 2×7.5MHz blocks of spectrum covering the entire Russian territory.
Ziggo launches Dutch LTE mobile network
The Netherlands’ leading cable operator by subscribers Zesko Holding (trading as Ziggo) has launched a fourth-generation mobile network based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology for business users in the country, using its spectrum in the 2600MHz band. At launch the service is being offered to customers with an ‘Internet Plus’ cable broadband subscription in the cities of Breda, Zwolle and Oss – branded as 4G LTE Mobile Broadband
Anatel hopes 4G auction will raise BRL3.8bn
Brazilian telecommunications regulator Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes (Anatel) expects that the forthcoming auction of mobile frequencies in the 2.5GHz and 450MHz bands will generate a minimum BRL3.8 billion (USD2 billion) for the government, BNAmericas reports.
Regulator ordered to pay MML USD76 million
The Blantyre High Court’s Commercial Division has ordered the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) to pay USD66.85 million to defunct wireless operator Malawi Mobile Limited (MML) for breach of contract, local newspaper The Nation reports. The case dates back to 2005, when the telecoms regulator stripped MML of its licence, stating the company failed to roll out its network on time. The cellco went on to contend the revocation of its licence in court, arguing that the move was a breach of contract, and said it would seek USD135 million in compensation.
Cofetel launches consultation on interconnection rate cost model
Mexican telecoms regulator the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel) is planning to launch a public consultation regarding the proposed cost model for defining fixed and mobile interconnection rates.
Anatel will begin reviewing 4G tender proposals and reveal auction date on 5 June
Brazil’s telecoms regulator Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes (Anatel) says it will begin the process of reviewing proposals for the country’s upcoming tender of 2.5GHz and 450MHz mobile spectrum for 4G services on 5 June. BNAmericas quotes an unnamed official at Anatel as saying that at the same date, the watchdog will confirm the date when the spectrum licences will be awarded.
