Estonian mobile network operator Eesti Mobiiltelefon (EMT) has announced the launch of a pilot project in which it will test mobile TV services over its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. With the company noting that its 4G infrastructure now covers around 40% of the Estonian population, EMT CEO Valdo Kalm noted that pricing for the service has yet to be determined, stating that his company was currently collecting information regarding tariffs for similar products in other countries.
AzTelekom widens broadband coverage in rural areas
Azeri telecoms operator AzTelekom, which is wholly owned by the state via the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), is set to expand the availability of broadband services in rural parts of the country through the deployment of a 600km fibre-optic cable.
Las Vegas cops take a gamble on LTE
Florida-based Harris Corporation has announced that it installing 700MHz Long Term Evolution (LTE) configured modems in a number of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) vehicles in a pilot programme aimed at demonstrating the potential of next generation wireless broadband technology. LVMPD is testing Harris’ Radio Access Network infrastructure, which is connected to the Harris-hosted LTE core in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Finnish vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has supplied a number of ‘eNode B’ base stations, which are able to operate in all 20MHz of the 700MHz ‘Band 14’ spectrum allocated to public safety.
Telecom NZ confirms customer LTE trials by end-2012
Telecom New Zealand has announced that it will be conducting live customer trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technology later this year, in preparation for the evolution of its ‘XT’ mobile broadband network from 3G to 4G. A press statement released by the operator quotes its CEO Paul Reynolds as saying: ‘Future network investment will be based on maintaining our network leadership position with a particular focus on accommodating the explosive growth in mobile data and continued rise of smart-devices. We will progressively adopt 4G network capability, starting with a customer trial later this year using LTE technology.
EVN Telecom officially handed over to Viettel
Vietnamese military-run company Viettel Corporation has officially taken control of the telecoms unit of state-owned utility company Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), local press reported. EVN Telecom and its five member companies have signed documents to hand over their assets to Viettel, after Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a decision to allow the transfer of the struggling operator to the military-owned firm on 1 January 2012.
T-Mobile taps Ericsson, NSN for LTE rollout
T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it has awarded multi-year network equipment supply contracts to two international vendors, Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN); both agreements relate to the deployment of T-Mobile’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. The contracts, which Bloomberg says are worth around USD4 billion, will see 37,000 cell sites upgraded to support LTE.
TechMax snaps up Clearwire Belgium
Datanews.be reports that WiMAX operator Clearwire has sold its Belgian subsidiary to TechMax, a local telecoms company owned by businessman Max Heilbron. TechMax has acquired approximately 15,000 broadband subscribers, operating concessions, the WiMAX infrastructure and around 30 employees; no financial details have been disclosed
Apple to take a bite out of MVNO sector?
Veteran wireless industry strategist Whitey Bluestein, who has managed strategic deals for the likes of AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, has claimed that Apple Inc is poised to offer wireless connectivity directly to iPhone and iPad users. According to technology website BGR.com, Bluestein told the Informa MVNO Industry Summit in Barcelona: ‘The battleground is set, but Apple will be the first mover.
Tango and cash; Qualcomm invests USD40m in Luxembourg telco
Luxembourg’s full-service telecoms provider Tango has secured an additional USD40 million worth of funding from a series of investors, Telecompaper reports. Principal investors include US wireless technology manufacturer Qualcomm, acting through its venture arm, Qualcomm Ventures, and Access Industries. Additional investment has been sourced from members of co-founder Eric Setton’s family, who have bankrolled the company since its inception
ICASA unveils five-year plan
South Africa’s telecoms regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), has unveiled its strategic plan for the next five years, reports technology news site mybroadband.co.za. The watchdog says its priorities for the period covering 2012-2013 include local loop unbundling (LLU), more choice for broadband access and fairer pricing, and the introduction of a wholesale network access product (bitstream) by November 2012. Meanwhile, the Department of Communications says it plans to give ICASA the green light in May 2012 to issue an invitation to apply for spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands, often used for 4G LTE services.
