Telecom Italia chairman Franco Bernabe has confirmed that the group’s Brazilian asset TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) will take part in the country’s upcoming auction of 4G mobile spectrum, despite concerns over the regulator, Anatel’s, auction process. With the auction of frequencies suitable for Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology set to start on 12 June, only last week Brazil’s leading cellcos TIM, Oi, Vivo, Claro and Sweden’s AINMT (which controls Net1), reportedly filed separate petitions to challenge Anatel’s auction plan
Antares to merge with mobile TV operator Dominanta?
According to an unconfirmed report by Kommersant, would-be Russian Long Term Evolution (LTE) operator Antares Telecom has disclosed plans to officially merge its operations with those of mobile TV operator Dominanta. In January this year the Russian media reported that local businessman Yevgeny Roitman had acquired a 75% stake in Dominanta, Vimpelcom’s ill-fated DVB-H mobile TV unit, which saw its progress derailed by regulatory red-tape
VTR launches mobile services, will use existing customer base to drive growth
Chilean cableco VTR has launched commercial voice and data services over its 3G W-CDMA network. The company’s chairman, Mauricio Ramos said that the telco would bring ‘more competition, more innovation and more convenience’ to Chilean mobile subscribers.
AT&T, US Cellular move to acquire unused Cox Communications 700MHz licences
In separate transactions, AT&T Mobility and US Cellular are looking to purchase a number of 700MHz licences, chiefly from Cox Communications, Fierce Wireless reports.
Tele2 denies Russian exit rumours
Swedish telecoms giant Tele2 has denied Russian media reports suggesting that the company plans to sell its Russian subsidiary. In a statement issued late on Tuesday, Tele2 said: ‘The management of Tele2 Russia is not holding any talks on the sale of its business’
Tesco Mobile Ireland doubles revenues, posts pre-tax profit
Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Tesco Mobile Ireland, a joint venture between retail giant Tesco and Telefonica O2 Ireland, booked revenues of EUR21.5 million (USD27.5 million) in FY 2011, more than double the EUR10.6 million figure reported the previous year. In a filing to the Republic’s Companies Office, the MVNO also reported it turned a pre-tax loss of EUR678,000 in fiscal 2010 into a pre-tax profit of EUR5.3 million last year, and booked an operating profit of EUR5.9 million, compared with EUR8,000 in FY 2010.
Telkom refutes claim it has submitted Pacnet bid
The chairman of PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom Indonesia), Jusman Syafii, has told Dow Jones Newswires that his firm has not submitted a bid to buy the undersea cable operator Pacnet Limited, scotching earlier press rumours that a deal is in place. The official declined to provide full details, but did say: ‘We’re just assessing [a deal], but there’s been no decision and we haven’t yet submitted a bid.’ Last week, Reuters reported that Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telecommunications firm by assets and subscribers, submitted a bid to buy Pacnet for around USD1 billion including debt, after conducting due diligence on its business over the past few months. The report went on to claim that Pacnet had appointed Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs to advise on a planned sale
SPTC finally ceases sale of Fixedfone, ONE offerings
The Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) has finally stopped selling its contentious fixed-wireless and mobile products, The Times of Swaziland reports. In March 2012 the SPTC reportedly made an offer to withdraw its ‘ONE’ mobile phone and fixed-wireless ‘Fixedfone’ services from the market, in a bid to end its bitter ongoing dispute with the country’s sole mobile operator, MTN Swaziland. The offer was made on the eve of a hearing at the International Court of Arbitration in Geneva which sought to put an end to the feud
LTE Advanced tests reported by Tele2, Telenor
Sweden’s second- and third-largest mobile operators by users, Tele2 and Telenor, have achieved data speeds of 290Mbps using LTE Advanced technology in tests via their Net4Mobility infrastructure sharing venture in partnership with Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei.
TechMax snaps up Clearwire Belgium
Datanews.be reports that WiMAX operator Clearwire has sold its Belgian subsidiary to TechMax, a local telecoms company owned by businessman Max Heilbron. TechMax has acquired approximately 15,000 broadband subscribers, operating concessions, the WiMAX infrastructure and around 30 employees; no financial details have been disclosed
